Proactive Job Search

To be proactive in their job search, students should interact with the Career Center soon after they begin their first year. Early contact is integral to the success of Mines students and graduates so they will be able to acquire the necessary job search and professional development skills. The initial goal is to help the student first obtain experience while they are in school. In order to achieve this goal, the Career Center starts the students’ career development process through workshops, one-on-one job search advice, resume development, practice interviews, proactive recruiting outreach, student presentations, and continuous communications. Students are strongly encourage to attend the huge fall and spring Career Day events at, company information sessions, use of the online recruiting database, and on-campus interviews.

Resume, Cover Letter, and Online Branding. The Career Center staff can help you with creating a value-added resume / CV and strong customized cover letters that best present your qualifications for strong marketability and increase your conversion rate of resumes submitted to interviews obtained. The Career Center will assist in developing and implementing your online strategy with the important tools will result in a positive response.

Professional Job Searching Workshops and Small Group Table Talks. Presented by Career Center Staff and top company recruiters, over forty workshops a year are offered to all students, student groups, and in classroom presentations. Topics include: Resume Writing, Proactive Job Search, Interviewing Skills, Stand Out at Career Day, Networking, Business Etiquette, Social Media, Succeed at Your Internship, Contract Review/Negotiations, and more!

Practice Interviews. Stop by and schedule an appointment for a practice interview with one of the Career Advisors, who will offer coaching and feedback about your approach. For additional practice, the Career Center offers a convenient free online practice interview system in DiggerNet.

This 1.0 credit course (CSM 250) is designed to provide the student with advanced career planning and job searching tools that are instrumental to be successful in obtaining internships, co-ops, research, and full-time positions. Strongly recommended for all students, the class provides guidelines on transitioning into a new career, and making a positive impact in a chosen profession. Top guest speakers, who are leaders in their industries, impart their valuable advice and tips.
